According to some reviewers, the film’s plot is similar to that of Kung Fu Hustle, a martial arts comedy film released in 2004, starring Hong Kong actor Stephen Chow. Nicole Scherzinger, of the American Pop group Pussycat Dolls, acted as Pacquiao’s leading lady. Other notable personalities who appeared in the film included World Wrestling Entertainment’s Dave Batista (David Michael Bautista Jr.), whom many saw at Pacquiao’s previous boxing fight as a member of his entourage; Hollywood stars Lou Diamond Philips, Tia Carrere, and Rob Schneider; and Internet personality Christine Gambito (known also as HappySlip)—all of whom have Filipino ancestry.
Titled Wapakman, the movie was shot primarily in the province of Sarangani, in the SOCCSKSARGEN region of Mindanao. Produced by Wilson Tieng of Solar Films and directed by Topel Lee, it was released in December of last year as an entry to the 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival.
